SL paid the price for carrying passengers in the team just like the last world cup. We had a golden opportunity in the 50 over version last time around but the persistance on Tharanga instead of Marven cost us the title that time. And this time it was Silva (one wonders why he got selected to the squad in the first place) and to some extent Mubarak.

Our team is the only one in the world (when it comes to cricket) that sticks to this stupid theory of going with the winning combination. And this applies to only a few favourites of the selectors & the captain. This has been a feature of SL cricket ever since the famous 'joker' took over the role and practised perfectly by Mahela & now Sanga. These jobs have never been so politicised as we see it today and it needs to change for the betterment of SL cricket. Sanga once said Mahela is his 'buddy' in the team and both think in same lines perfectly executing what the joker wants. Mahela is SL's best captain in terms of winning percentages & I'm sure Sanga will also rise up to that level but where are the trophies???These two are definitely the two best batsmen in SL in any form of the cricket at the moment but not good enough for the top job. Just see the way Sanga praised Silva at every post match presentation despite his mediocre performance. You feel sorry for guys like Maharoof & De saram.

Mahen, sorry man, I know your defence blog is not the forum to discuss cricket but I'm just pissed off for not been able to show our character to those peelamist protesting right throughout the tournament. We lost a golden opportunity.

Common man and the Elite!

Up until the times of Mahinda Rajapakse, Sri Lanka was ruled by an elite class who were brought up with special circumstances. Even though MR is also not quite far from these so called elite, the texture is of a different sort. These are the Sinhalese speaking village level elite who would mingle with the common man rather than English speaking white man. They are different to the Colombo Elite, who would always seek approval from the white man before they would start anything. The earlier rulers would always listen to the embassies from countries which belong to Anglo-Saxon empire while the business elite would always seek consultancy from the firms based on the same countries. The perception is: “where the white man is, there is expertise”. However our daring forces have proved this wrong. Had we listened to the preaching from the Anglo-Saxons, we would have still been dealing with LTTE separatism, keep aside talking about development. We hail MR regime for this great achievement of winning terrorists (which the Anglo-Saxons preached we would never be able to defeat) having the guts to go against consensus propagated by foreigners and showing the world how to deal with terrorism. Now countries such as Pakistan and US are following on our footsteps.

However, the elite who would side with the Anglo-Saxons are still at large and they will make sure to make as much trouble as possible for the next stage, which is developing the country. Thinking out of the box is what we needed in the war front and we did it fine. Doing the same in the development front is the big challenge. Even though the educations gurus from Anglo-Saxons would preach thinking outside the box would encourage innovation, in reality, they would always practice the copy and paste mentality. That is, they set the tone and we copy and paste the scenario they set and customize it slightly where we need to take a bit of credit to the program. For instance, the concept of water management etc (selling our water resources to the transnational companies) is such copy and paste ideas which they would propagate globally these days for their own benefits. As proven time and time again, the Sri Lankan elite are also more than happy to take the copy paste approach. Fortunately, common man in Sri Lanka has already rejected this line of thinking and is ready to adopt the out of the box approach. That’s why Sri Lankans took a lot of economic pain to give room for the government to concentrate on the war against terror which the nation emerged victorious as a result. Thus, we see that Sri Lankan common man is far ahead in thinking creatively compared with the Colombo based elite who had power in their hands for more than half a decade and yet to prove what they can do for the development of the country.

Thus, the fight between the common man in the nation and the elitist class would be more and more apparent in the front of development of the nation now. The Colombo elite will try their best to use the copied and pasted text to get their points across, and be feared if the government would continue to lean towards Eurasia, where our actual friends who stood with us during the war were from. They would say that we cannot survive without IMF loans, a man from earlier JVP cannot be the minister of tourism because they cannot speak posh English, we cannot electrify the full nation because the world bank report has only recommended 75% national electrification in Sri Lanka (but we have already exceeded 85%!), and eventually, they will say that the final solution is the federal system. But the common man knows all these come from the Mr. Copy and Pastes and they have no credibility here anymore. They have failed the nation for last 60 years and proven that their liberal model of thinking is obsolete.

Common man and the Elite! ... cont

MR regime has so far done the right thing by rejecting this point of view. They have always looked at the common man’s perceptions and proved it is right. After all each person in this country is worth one vote at least. This populist but correct approach has led the government to be victorious so far. But the government must remember, these elitist copy and pastes would not let things go that easily. So the battle is won but the war between the common man and the elite continues. If the government would side with the common man and fight for them, the government would change the cause of the history. But, if they also eventually would take the course dictated by the elite class as other governments, even though the government won the war, they would not be immune from the wrath of the Sri Lankan common man. Hope MR has the wisdom (so far he has proven that he does!) to continue with the common man’s vision.

Hi (Ms.) Mahen,

Nice to see you after a long time.

We can do many things. First of all we must force the government to solve these kind of small issues:
