Breaking News – GoSL about to declare an unconditional ceasefire!

Units of the SLA’s 58th, 55th and 53rd have broken through the LTTE’s last lines of defence and have neared the boundaries of the No Fire Zone (NFZ), the units are expected to reach the gates of the NFZ in the next couple of days and will declare all territories except the NFZ liberated once they reach this goal. Informed sources report that the PTK IPD camp is already being geared up to receive civilians, once the SLA reaches the boundaries of the NFZ a massive civilian influx is expected. The most startling news released exclusively to EFT is that the GoSL will declare a ceasefire once they reach the NFZ. Moves are afoot to call in the UN to evacuate the civilians forcibly held by the LTTE in the NFZ. GoSL President Mahinda Rajapakse has played his cards rights, he will request the International Community who have been yelling fake calls of “genocide” and “humanitarian disaster” to deal with the LTTE and liberate all civilians trapped in the NFZ. Thus the SLA will suffer virtually no casualties and the IC will get a first hand experience of the LTTE.

EFT breaks the news! Stay tuned folks, more details are on your way!

OK lets suppose LTTE and the diaspora claims 'victory' after a ceasefire declaration by the government.

Which part of ealam are they going to control after that?

while civilians will be moving into detention camps

this is what will happen

sri, thanks to you GOSL might now get the idea to enforce the ceasefire only around the land areas near NFZ but not the sea.

Remember Sri Lanka is an Island which makes it a tad too difficult for the LTTE leaders to escape without using the sea :)

There wont be a cease-fire.

As soon as the Divisions 55, 58, 53 + TF 8 complete their tasks, government will declare that the offensives are over. (This is likely to happen)

The NFZ will be left and it'll be the time to please the international community. As like always, MR is doing it right. LTTE will be trapped like Rats. I think this is the best thing to do at the moment. To Take all the remaining areas except the No fire Zone and ask the International community to ask the LTTE to release the civilians. So all will be happy, LTTE will be gone forever and we will save the lives of our loving worriers.

The Best ever War movie Directed By Mahinda Rajapakse & Gotabaya Rajapakse, with the help of Great General Sarath Fonseka will end with a Great ending.

It'll be the first war which will end in a Diplomatic way.

Also, I am very skeptical about getting civilians out with the help of IC. Once civilians leave, LTTE won't have any place to hide and hence toast. Therefore, it is very unlikely to see anything coming out of this ceasefire. Furthermore, this shouldn't be an indefinite ceasefire inside NFZ. We should give IC only a few days to work this with a few days given to take all the civilians out. After that, we should wipe the rest off. Even during the "ceasefire" and single attack by LTTE should suffice to nullify the whole deal.

Sam Perera,

It sounds like it's not going to be another Ceasefire and it’s not going to be an indefinite one for sure. It’s that the government will announce that they have completed their Offensives against the LTTE. (All land without the NFZ will be taken, and this is expected to happen really soon). There will be conditions laid by the Government (Keheliya Rabukwella hinted out about this few days back at a press conference).

It’ll be interesting to see what the government s’ strategy will be to deal with the No Fire Zone. As of now, the talk is that, the government will ask the UN to assist to get the civilians out. I think it’s the wisest thing to do after the Divisions reaching the Borders of the NFZ, which is expected to happen really soon. Asking the UN to assist will shut the mouths of all LTTE ass kissers, and the LTTE will be trapped like nothing with nothing left for them to talk about. As at now, the only thing which is left for the LTTE is to talk about the Hardships the Civilians are going through in the NFZ, even though they are held by the LTTE by force.

We all have a big doubt whether the LTTE will release the civilians, even if UN comes into action.

Say the LTTE didn’t allow.

No one can say anything if our guys conduct a limited operation inside the NFZ to get the civilians out, after UN.

Sri Lanka: School principals protest in Colombo over pay claim
By Panini Wijesiriwardane
31 March 2009

More than 1,500 public school principals marched and protested outside the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Colombo on March 25 to demand an end to longstanding salary anomalies. The demonstration brought together Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim school heads across the ethnic divide that has been deepened by the government's ongoing communal war.

A section of the principals’ protest

As part of the protest, 200 principals handed over symbolic resignation letters to press for their demands. In their letters, they call on the education ministry to put them in their previous position as teachers, who receive higher wages than principals.

Backed by a heavy police presence, the officer-in-charge repeatedly threatened the principals with arrest under the country's emergency laws, accusing them of supporting "Tiger terrorists". The principals, members of the Association of Educational Professionals (AEP), ignored the threats and continued their demonstration.

The government has previously exploited its war against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to crack down on striking workers and protests by students and farmers, claiming they were aiding the enemy.

About 3,000 school principals—one third of the total number—have threatened to resign if the government does not resolve their problems. The Grade One Principals Union did not support the protest as its higher-level members are not affected. The Grade Three Principals Union, which is affiliated to the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), also did not take part.

Protesting principals told the WSWS that they had received no increments since 1991. Their monthly salary has stagnated at between 18,000 to 24,000 rupees (approximately $US175 to $225). Some would be entitled to 600,000 rupees in arrears if the increments to which they are entitled were paid. Over the same period, the cost of living index has skyrocketted from 1,131.5 in 1991 to 5,416 in 2007.

School heads have been given extra responsibilities, but fewer funds. Their monthly allowance has been frozen at 500 and 300 rupees according to their grade. Their travelling allowance has also been limited and their entitlement to buy a car tax free ended. To pay day-to-day expenses, most schools depend on donations from well-wishers.

A ministry letter to the union on February 27 noted that cabinet had approved a proposal on the salary anomalies and submitted it to the Public Services Commission in 2007 but had received no reply. The commission oversees the salaries of higher categories of public employees and other administrative matters.

The letter, however, is an evasion. President Mahinda Rajapakse has flatly refused to increase salaries of public employees, including teachers, on the grounds that there is no money because of the huge cost of the war.

Prior to a one-day teachers' strike in September 2007, the AEP along with the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) and the Ceylon Teacher Services Union (CTSU) met with Rajapakse over their salary demands. When the president asked whether they wanted him to withdraw the army from the North and East, none of the unions—including the CTU which claimed to oppose the war—were prepared to challenge him.

An unprecedented 200,000 teachers took part in the one-day protest on September 14, 2007. Incapable of waging a political struggle against the government and its war, the unions adapted to the pressure exerted by Rajapakse and ended any campaign. In October, the AEP and other unions called off a two-day strike on the basis of a worthless government promise to grant their demands by the end of 2007.

The AEP's protest last week was primarily aimed at letting off steam among its members. After handing over the resignation letters, AEP leader Wasantha Dharmasiri emphasised to the media just how moderate his union had been, saying "principals had been patient for 16 years, unlike other government servants". He claimed that another round of talks next month with the education ministry secretary represented a victory.

The government has no intention, however, of granting the demands of school principals or any other public sector workers. Having mortgaged the country to pay for his war, Rajapakse is confronting the worst global economic crisis since the 1930s. Desperate for funds to overcome a chronic balance of payments deficit, the government has been forced to turn to the IMF for a $1.9 billion loan.

While details of the loan talks have not been released, the government is already signalling its willingness to impose savage austerity measures and the IMF's free-market agenda. Earlier this month, the government passed a bill that sets the stage for the privatisation of the power sector. On March 12, it presented legislation to parliament that will open up tertiary education to private universities.

Last Thursday, government spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena announced further plans to slash public spending. Last week the Public Services Commission gazetted a series of new measures, including an efficiency test for all public sector workers that opens the door for mass retrenchments. Anyone who fails the test three times faces dismissal.

School principals and other public sector employees will not achieve their demands by pleading with and pressuring the Rajapakse government, which has already demonstrated that it will not hesitate to use police-state measures against any opposition. Workers can only defend their basic rights and living standards by unifying, opposing the war and building an independent movement based on socialist policies in the struggle for a workers and peasants government.

That is the perspective on which the Socialist Equality Party (SEP) is campaigning in the Colombo district for the Western Provincial Council elections.

My comment on Defencewire. I guess it will haunt him even if he does not publish it. As of now the people of eelam whom they were trying to target do not read their blog and also their own people themselves will get sick of the lies eventually.

In Defencewire:
"Looks like Sri Lanka has collapsed. It now shows that you have been defeated. Such is the crushing and humiliating defeat. Dessertions are on the rise and all around things are collapsing. You know whats the sad part of your stupidity, this is the internet and your mahindha mama and his white van cannot touch the people here. If you do not publish my comments, it will still appear elsewhere. You all took on something that you did not understand. It will take a very long time for your country to recover. You propaganda machinery has collapsed. You know that even propaganda after some time must be helped by some facts. YOU ARE THE BAGHAD BOB OF SRI LANKA."

Being Nobody said...

Navindran (a.k.a Poisson D'avril),

Wow man you are the first to comment on an April 1st .

Navindran , if you even have a bird sized brain you will not keep harping on your two great words “economic collapse’. Not only is your usage of this term incorrect you don’t seem to understand its meaning too.

Even if things hit rock bottom, it has its own way of picking up itself- otherwise the American economy would have never recovered from the Great Depression in the 1930’s. Many recession studies (not economic collapse studies) empirically prove how some economies start to flourish just after a downturn (look at the 1988-1989 SL GDP figures and compare them with the early 1990’s figures). In this sense an economic down turn is a corrective mechanism. I am glad an economic crisis hit SL during your mahinda mama’s tenure. This government is the only other SL government (the other being President premadasa’s) that gave some serious thought about strengthening the rural and agricultural sectors. These sectors not only has the potential to diversify SL’s export s they are also useful for producing import substitutions.

BTW, don’t worry we have/will find enough money to do this war for another few year if the need arises. The majority will see to that. But with the way things are going it will be curtains for you suckers soon. Too bad the timing went wrong for you. Had Vessapilla stayed till 2009 to close the sluice gates at Mavil aru things may have been slightly different. Thank you monkeys for making that mistake.

COLOMBO, April 1 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's rupee hit a life low of 116.00/10 versus the dollar on Wednesday on import demand for the U.S. currency, dealers said.

"The rupee hit 116.00/10 as a foreign bank bought dollars from the market due to import demand," said a currency dealer, who asked not to be named. Other dealers confirmed the fall. (Reporting by Shihar Aneez, Editing by Ian Geoghegan)

SEP campaigns among Sri Lankan rubber plantation workers
By Sampath Perera
1st April 2009

A Socialist Equality Party (SEP) team visited rubber plantation workers in Puwakpitiya, near Awissawella, about 50 km southeast of Colombo, to discuss the party's political program for the Western Provincial Council elections. The SEP is fielding a list of 46 candidates in the Colombo district, and the visit was part of the campaign for an election meeting to be held in Awissawella on April 5.

The Awissawella electorate is one of the poorest in the Colombo district. The area is predominantly rubber producing, featuring large plantation companies as well as small planters. The history of the plantation industry goes back to the final decades of the nineteenth century under British colonial rule. Most workers on these estates are descendants of Tamil-speaking labourers brought from Tamil Nadu in southern India to work in the plantations. They are among the most oppressed layers of the working class in Sri Lanka.

Rubber exports used to be Sri Lanka's third highest foreign exchange earner. However, since the late 1960s, world demand has declined. Workers' conditions have also deteriorated as plantation companies intensified the rate of exploitation in order to boost profits.

The SEP team visited the Elston and Farnham estates of the Pussallawa plantation. Approximately 1,400 workers, from about 650 families, are employed in the two estates. Most of the families live in line rooms—long, narrow buildings divided into rooms to house a family in each. Clusters of line rooms are separated from each other by 1 to 5 kilometres. The land is hilly, and while the roads used for estate operations are in good condition, those leading to workers' lines are not.

A few workers have been able to get small plots of land from the government. By earning additional money working outside the plantation, they have built small houses.

Female workers tapping rubber treesRubber workers have to start tapping rubber trees early in the morning, even before sunrise. This continues for several hours until they start collecting latex into large heavy cans, which they have to carry from tree to tree.

A young worker, Ganesh, was rushing to collect latex because if he missed the vehicle that took the latex to the factory, he would have to carry his load himself. Although a co-worker retorted "we see all these politicians when an election comes," Ganesh was eager to talk when the team explained that its aim was to start a discussion on the important political issues confronting workers.

Ganesh explained: "I have two children. I have to feed my family of five, including my mother. It is very difficult. I can earn only 280 rupees (about $US2.50) a day, provided I work 24 days a month. If not, the daily pay is even less. For this, we have to tap 325 to 350 rubber trees a day. It's not just tapping 325 trees because we've to go back to each tree after tapping to collect the latex. We're collecting at least 10kg of latex."

SEP members explained that President Mahinda Rajapakse and his government were systematically militarising the whole country while waging war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the north. The government was increasingly slashing spending on essential social services to fund the war, which cost 200 billion rupees in 2008.
