Government suspends conventional operations

The GoSL has made an announcement via the MOD that conventional operations are over, conventional operations refer to infantry push backed by mechanised armour, artillery support, HMG fire and CAS. We can assure our readers that the cessation of conventional operations does not equal to a cessation of non conventional operations such as SF and LRRP missions. We expect the Government to make an announcement later on Tuesday or Wednesday justifying the end of routine combat operations, it will be good news for all.

What we can say for now is that SF teams have started a major push today. VP is said to be hiding in the Karayamullivaikkal area. Intel expect more and more cadres (including hardcore cadres and leaders) to surrender the closer Special Forces get to VP's location. Already 50 cadres have surrendered, what you read about and saw on TV is only the tip of the iceberg - there are many more senior leaders and hardcore cadres who have surrendered, publicity is not being given in order to protect their identities. VP is said to be changing his location from time to time as he knows that those who flee willingly provide information on his whereabouts. The remaining cadres are fighting back with light arms only, most of their heavy weapons have been captured and they have run out of ammo for the remaining heavy weapons.

The GoSL is bent on capturing or killing VP, that objective has not changed and will not change no matter what the international community or political jokers in Tamil Nadu say or do.

The SBS of the SLN is the SLA equivalent of SF and Commandos. They are the best in the Navy, they have joined in the operations. Some Naval equipment are being moved towards the South East so that we can safe guard the sea area. We have captured one of the main radar centres belonging to LTTE.

We cannot divulge any more information, rumour mills are flowing and speculation is rife, some maybe proven correct....

Mahen, why is there a reason to hide the identity of the surrendered cadres. The LTTE is over, so why the secrecy?

i don't think the government is going to stop the war knowing that it will be the end of the support from people.

seems like this is just another tactic to soften the pressure by the so called IC. u guys know how talented MR is in tackling his opponents ;)

anyway, we sri lankans, specially our politicians should remember how some countries behaved in support of the terrorists at this crucial time and treat them accordingly.

Good move.

SF and CR are virtually on top of LTTE. If heavy weapons are used, it'll land on top of our heads anyway. Further, no mass movement of troops can be used for a delicate hostage rescue operation. So use the situation to get some propaganda. Excellent move I would say :))

Just sit back and enjoy the show folks

PS: and judging by TamilNuts response, it seems Govt's tactical move was a success and caught it unawares!

from tamilnet:

" He blamed Colombo for "attempting to deceive the International Community, including the people of Tamil Nadu," with the announcement. "

"Commenting on the latest developments, an ex-militant based in Colombo said Sri Lankan military no longer needed air attacks, MBRL or artillery fire to carry on the onslaught as the announcement didn't say that it would not be using heavy mortar fire, RPG fire and the deployment of tanks as it would continue to engage its ground forces in the combat, questioning how Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Commander-in-Chief of the Sri Lankan armed forces defines the term 'heavy weapons'.

Sri Lankan forces launched a ground offensive around 3:30 a.m. Monday aiming to enter the remaining area of the so-called safety zone, an area comprising 8 square kilometres, which is under siege by the Sri Lankan military."

Nice move by MR to fool tamilnadu jokers.

I just heard some information that what the government means is that the "combat operations have come to the conclusion stage", therefore, all other military operations will go thru as planned sans big guns and air strikes..

Mahen said...

With the level of resistance we experience from the LTTE these days, they might even consider paint ball guns to be too much for them, soon they might show civilians with paint ball marks and report them as "SLA targets civlians with paint ball guns", its not beyond them.

Being Nobody said...

Surely Karuna-Nidi must be feeling relieved as he can now stop his fast and go start eating like a PIG...

BB said,
"i don't think the government is going to stop the war knowing that it will be the end of the support from people."

More than peoples' support, stopping something unfinished does not make any sense. If Ranil had said "no more combat ops" then there would have been none at all. As the poor fellow is suffering from a chronic spinal cord illness his is also more likely to stick it too.

So let's hope this statement by gov. is just tactful diplomacy.

Guys, this is the true story behind GOSL news release...

Unable to bare the hunger, Karunanidhi has phoned MR asking to make a statement saying the war has been stopped..MR who felt really sorry for the 80+ old KN finally agreed to make such a statement so that hungry KN can stop the fast and eat for his liking ...hak hak hak....

Chinthana4Lions said...

So this mean forces will not use armored tanks as well?

Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi, who went an a sudden indefinite fast on Monday morning demanding immediate ceasefire in Sri
Lanka, called the hunger strike off at about noon saying he had been assured by the Centre of concrete action on the issue.

Six Questions for David Milliband, British Foreign Secretary when he visits Sri LankaTo assist the Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry, I've compiled these questions to put to Mr Milliband on his impending visit.

"Welcome to Sri Lanka, Foreign Secretary. We're honoured that you've come so far to share your wisdom and advice. We understand that the UK is pursuing an especially successful counter-insurgency campaign in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We in Sri Lanka still have much to learn from the UK about combatting terrorism, human rights and the rule of law. I hope you'll be unsparing in sharing your knowledge with us."

1. How many civilians have been killed so far, in Iraq as a result of the joint UK/US illegal invasion of that sovereign nation? We understand that many were killed during air strikes and ground action during the initial combat phase. Then more were killed during the subsequent insurgency unleashed as a result of this invasion.

2. How many civilians have been killed so far, in Afghanistan as a result of the joint UK/US/NATO invasion launched to destroy Al-Quaeda? We understand that many Afghan wedding parties have been mistakenly attacked by NATO airpower. Is this a result of

3. How many civilians have been killed so far, in Pakistan as a result of the joint UK/US/NATO unmanned drone attacks on suspected Al-Quaeda hiding places?

Our team here in the SL Foreign Ministry is running a betting pool on the total numbers of dead civilians. I'm hoping that your definitive statement will help us declare a winner.4. We're very impressed with the UK/US 'Extraordinary Rendition program. I understand this to involve a system of arrest without warrant, kidnap, imprisonment in secret jails outside the UK and long periods of torture for suspected islamic terrorists. Are you planning on extending this program to non-Islamic terrorists?

5. Curtailing Civil Liberties in the UK. We understand that your government has introduced detention without trial, secret arrest, an almost total surveillance society from CCTV to telephone and email interception and racial preference in the employment sector. Can you advise us on how to prevent Sri Lanka following the same path, after the war against the LTTE is ended?

6. We understand that there are at least three serious separatist movements in the UK. In Scotland, Wales and Cornwall. The LTTE still operate and fundraise with impunity in the UK. Would you object if UK separatists were allowed to organise, plan, recruit and carry out military training in Sri Lanka, with the eventual aim of winning a separate state for their 'own' people?

7. Creating a political police force. We understand that in 2005, the Police arrested the British female peace activist for merely reading out a list of the UK's current Mid-East war dead, at the Cenotaph, which is near Parliament and in the 'no-demo' zone. How did you arrange the LTTE demonstrators to be allowed to fly banned flags during a banned demo and not be arrested by the Police? This is most impressive.

Shall we go for hoppers and sambol now?

This lazy bastard had Monday morning blues...and (according to Times of India) was fasting from (monday) morning to noon, i.e Breakfast to Lunch time. ....lol

Just to clarify the number of air strikes reported by Tamilnut is not even close to reality, there have been the odd pin point strike and CAS (Mi-24) here and there but not at the rate that Tamilnut reports. However, there has been a lot of SLAF activity in the NFZ, i.e. evacuating casualties with the MI-17s, Mi-8s. Also Palaly has seen several SLAF cargo planes bearing humanitarian supplies. Tamilnut is exaggerating based on humanitarian SLAF activities.

We don't like to give deadlines, but remaining LTTE should be flushed out by Wednesday (it may already have happened).

Mahen said...

The cessation of combat operations announcement was timed to perfection, MR is a master strategist. It was timed to coincide with the TN elections and our own WPC elections. Had the timing been any earlier, MR would have risked UPFA votes for the WPC, any later it would lead to a Congress defeat in Tamil Nadu.

Karunanidhi is a better actor than Jayalalitha, it should have been the Jayalalitha / Karunidhi dou rather than MGR. His fast lasted all of two hours.

Our political machine is firing on all cylinders, inside sources tell us that MR doesn't even have time to answer Gordon Brown's telephone calls.

Sri Lanka doesn't need lectures from losers, like Britain. You may not know this, but the UK forces have suffered a humiliating defeat & retreat in Basra. It's so bad that they've had to handover security to the US forces and hide in an airbase in Basra.

British forces are also handing over parts of Afghanistan to US forces.

GOSL is continually slated for "not allowing independent media access to its' war zones to report the real truth about the fighting.".

Upcoming elections in the UK means that the UK MOD is clamping down on negative reporting from Afghanistan.

And the UK wants to lecture GOSL? Ha!

"Mango, We should point out the double standard of current British Gov to British media."Nice idea. But they already know the full extent of UK govt hypocrisy. They don't like tactics used by GOSL to defeat the LTTE. They don't like GOSL, seeing it only as a 'Sinhalese supremacist govt'. They don't like being denied access to the front lines.

GOSL is also to blame in not cultivating enough journalists to report more accurately. The LTTE, has been cultivating journalists, MPs, BBC staff for over 20 years.

You might have better luck with the conservative supporting/right wing press, e.g. The Sun, Daily Mail etc.

Its just a maneuver to help out the Congress and todays fast of Karunanidhi has been improvised due to the statement as well. As he had knowledge of such a statement beforehand.
