Soldiers sacrifice their lives and limbs in final push to rescue civilian hostages

(By EFT – Vanni Correspondent)
Bloody battles

Yesterday, the SLA’s 53rd and TF8 suffered heavy casualties mainly due to booby traps while trying to push through the Tiger FDL bordering the NFZ, around 50 infantrymen lost their legs - KIA figure is undisclosed. This was one of the bloodiest days in recent battles. The 58th is positioned to break through the NFZ FDL any time now.

President makes morale boosting visit to Kilinochchi

The GoSL President, Mahinda Rajapakse announced that he is fully behind the SLDFs objectives in wiping out terror. The announcement made during his visit to the former de-facto capital of the LTTE is seen as a morale boost to the SLA high rankers and foot soldiers before the final push into the non liberated territories. The President has promised to deal with international pressure until the tri-forces complete their ongoing mission of rescuing civilians forcibly held by the LTTE.

UN Special Envoy arrives in Sri Lanka

An United Nations Special Enjoy appointed by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon arrived yesterday and is expected to meet the President today. The Special Envoy met the Defence Secretary yesterday. EFT does not want to speculate on the purpose of the visit but unverified information suggests that it has something to do with an UN role in supervising the welfare of the Wanni IDPs.

50 men lost their legs.

Correct me if I am wrong. But if stealth and surprise is not essential in a particular offensive isn't the above casualty figure too high?(I mean injuries due to APs)

Tigers expect every second for us to launch an attack now. So surprise of the attack is not something to be considered is it? Isnt there something we can do to remove the APs before launching an offensive?

Bloody battles-50 men lost their legs

This is all thanks to that useless 48 hr ceasefire. Give LTTE another day, they will plant many more booby traps. The best and the braves shall not wasted like this more.

LTTE now has to protect only 20km^2 and SLA has to attack at that place only at any time. So timing and multiple fronts have less relevance now. (Still SLA can use place and time for their choice in micro scale but I don't know how good it would be.)

So it seems SLA casualties are unavoidable in this case.

/HE the president, the military top brass and the united nations officials along with selected representatives of the diplomatic community finished a lengthy delebration of talks a few minutes ago...

the evacuation plan and the contingency were discussed in length as the small teams of the commando regiment experienced and trained in urban warfare and close quarter battles are now stationed, taking positions in the no fire zone awaiting the green signal from the CC...

final push to commence shortly...with the expectation of ending within this month... /

I hope UN will not call and tell the plan to LTTE...

intel reports spoke of over 200 recruited yesterday even amongst the civilians...

they still have about 1500-2000 cadres left and a good 800 or so centralized with who we believe is the leader who is directing the ltte at the moment in the no fire zone...whoe ever that may be...

Ltte shot and killed over 15 yesterday accusing them of plotting to escape...so much for the sole reps of Tamils...:((

Meanwhile the 58 and 53 reached the first part of thr milestone in the final push...the ltte launched a small scale counter attack yesterday on the 53 while when the arti support was called in ,vanished without a trace.../

I saw at "Deyata kirula" Exhibition a type of vehicle used to clearing a path through a mine field.(A vehicle with a sort of a roller attached with chains in the front). The soldier told me that it is not used in battle fronts due to the fear that they will be captured by the LTTE. But i think the time to worry about hardware losses is gone now. We need to save as much soldiers as possible. Perhaps its time to put these machines to use

CFA means by definition in LTTE tamil dictionary SLA don't do any thing while LTTE do every thing. In fact, LTTE can spend more cadres guarding civilians so in a CFA period no or less civilians can escape. And longer the CFA more time to build earth bunds, burry AP mines etc.

Stop trying to make Bull***T comments.
Those got nothing to do with the 48 hrs ceasefire.
SLA can sit behind those with out loosing any. If SLA do that, you would be the first one to start typing too.

So use your brain before using the fingers.

Sam Perera said...

Mahen,

Are suggesting that LTTE will just play fair and abide by a ceasefire? Grow up dude, and look at the history of ceasefires in SL. We snooze, we loose. That is the golden rule. LTTE will try to gain every advantage like planting booby traps and recruiting more warm bodies, and further preventing civilian movement if you give them chance.

I believe that there is no other option. Glad that we started moving forward. We need to shrink the NFZ. And reach the stuck civilians. It is unrealistic to believe that they will be allowed to come to us, despite whatever parties urging.

This seem to be the ONLY option. We should find some diplomats to handle the IC. Maybe a trip to Sigiriya will be good for them, ha?

It is interesting to see the developments in Canada. Especially the stalemate breaks up and govt bend in front of protesters. It looks likely. And if so, the next will be a double humiliation to Canada when SL refuse to abide their suggestions.

Why can't Canadian govt treat terrorists as terrorists and use tear gas to expel road blocks? Don't they know that they are setting a very bad example?

Hello folks. They are all scavengers that manipulate historical information. Frontline information is always held and no detailed accounts are given to any individual other than sharing with in high command itself. Hence I suggest to treat this and other so called BREAKING NEWS as good as surrender of Pottuamman way back...SLA has started it's offensive but operation details were not given to any Tom,Dick or Harry. We suggest you think before you type, by trying to discredit our news you are actually belittling our source who is on the frontline fighting pigs unlike yourself sitting in a comfortable air conditioned office and typing garbage.

If you are so close to the "High Command" you will know the truth about the Pottu story - its obvious you don't.

If you do have first hand completely 100% verified and credible news, why don't you start your own blog and enlighten us all?

We have encountered the likes of you and have seen them off, same future awaits you.

sldf said...

Thxs for the update.

Ground commanders recently stated that they need to clear least 50,000 civilians in the no fire zone before any ground operations taken place. I believe this was one the reason for the CF. Unfortunately many civilians didn't get the chance to cross over to Govt side during the 2 day CF period. From what I understand current operation has few phases. Once group keeps LTTE busy while another get the civilians out.

As much I would like these operations to end. It will not end in April. It’ll will go on till end of May.

hemantha said...

"50 men lost their legs."

Not the correct figure. It is much less than that. But the total # injured was around 50.

Mahen said...

Buster,

Its obvious that you have an axe to grind with the SLDF. We don't care whether you think that our source is in the frontline or not.

Is your surname Wickramasinghe / Jayawardene / Premadasa / Daluwatta / Karunayaka / Matthew / Dissanayaka / Bandaranayaka?

Sam Perera said...

Buster,

Thanks for the warning. As a rule of thumb, I consider anything coming out of an anonymous source to be a rumor.

Yes, the famous Pottu's story is something I never took in face value for the following reasons.

(1) If it is known only to a very few people, then I believe that the following people should be there at minimum.

(a)Head of DMI
(b)SLA Commander
(c)Secretary of Defence
(d)President

(2)It is very unlikely that the above 4 will release tidbits of the story for public consumption if it was so secrative.

(3)If it is somebody on the side of above 4 or in MI field ops, then exposing such state secrets is treason.

(4) If what Mahen says is true, then many radio intercepts by MI about Pottu apologizing to trapped Vidusha etc. etc. must be just a charade to cover the defection story.

(5) Why should MI go such long ways to coverup this story is an enigma? Exposing the capture and a few words from Pottu about defection on TV could have delivered a fatal blow to LTTE morale.

Based on these possibilities, if the story is true indeed, then Mahen should be somebody very close to 4 main players or straight from MI who was in the field.

If the story is not true, the of course we need not to say anything about Mahen said here.

If nothing else became of the two-day ceasefire, in my opinion it did serve an important political purpose. The military cost of the ceasefire against any political mileage gained by this unilaterally declared ceasefire is a matter to be debated between the powers that be.

GOSL could now take this as an example before the international community to prove that the LTTE does not honour any type of ceasefire. They could now be confident before the IC NOT to offer any ceasefire to the LTTE. The people of Sri Lanka could now be justified even more of their plea to their government to eradicate the LTTE without further ado.

Yes, it is heart breaking when our boys suffer; there is no way to console one self when a young life is lost or permanently disabled. But there is a bigger picture to consider. Errors of judgement are one thing but what gets me is when lives are lost due to corrupt politicians and/or military leadership. I hope the current crop of leaders are better than some we had in the past (who rented weapons to the LTTE!)

Intersecting NFZ into two from Puthikudyiruppu road is good and logical approach. MI24 gun ships can help over Nanthi Kadal lagoon. Tigers will have dilemma which section to protect. Naturally they will opt to protect the section with the leadership. Then we could liberate all civilians in the other section quickly and concentrate on the remaining section to wipe out the leadership.

A sure way to go!

According to "Times Online" the British government had regular meetings with the British LTTE terrorist leader "Shanthan".

And also it is well established now that orders for most of the suicide attacks occurred in Colombo, which killed hundreds of civilians were came straight from Britain.

Sri Lankan government should start an investigation immediately to probe weather there was any connection between suicide bombings in Colombo and the British government. It is surprising the way some of the British parliamentarians working hand in hand with the banned LTTE terrorists.
